Overwhelmed
I wanted to call your attention to a followup on Best of the Blogs to my post there yesterday about the incoherence of believing Bush lied to us and botched the war on terror, but at the same time approving of the job he is doing. From somewhere in the Far East, John McCreery tries to explain why our attitudes are so incoherent.

For one thing, John says we're like an abused spouse who keeps going back to the abuser, because cutting the cord and going off on our own is too frightening. Better the devil we know, in other words. And for another, acting tough makes us feel more secure. There is no better illustration of that than the promises of an "overwhelming response" to the killers of the Americans in Fallujah this week. It sounds great, but what does it mean? We can only kill the killers once. Threatening an "overwhelming response" makes it sound like we're going to kill a lot more than just the killers, in hopes of making a point.

While you're over there, look for another great post, this one from another of the guest bloggers, Vicki Meagher, on what Bill O'Reilly and Britney Spears have in common.

This is probably my last post until Monday night or Tuesday. Really. I mean it.
